Microsoft screws up on Vista. Again

No! Surely some mistake!

SOFTWARE AND hardware and networking and console firm Microsoft seems to have issued the wrong release of Windows Vista Business & Enterprise Editions to its Volume Licence Customers.

From the original release earlier this month, there were problems that arose with the install DVD as well as the installed versions of Vista.

A note on the web site said: "Reinstall Required: If you downloaded Windows Vista Business 32 Bit in English before November 22, 2006, please download and reinstall the updated version. We apologize for any inconvenience.."

Interesting timing on this article... We were just debating the usefulness of 4GB RAM in system as opposed to 2GB.

Pirates have released another ingenious workaround to Vista's copy protection: a hacked copy of Microsoft's yet-to-be-released volume licencing activation server, running in VMware.

Volume Activation 2.0 is one of the more controversial features of Vista: it means that every copy of Vista has to be activated, even the Business/Enterprise volume licenced editions.

However, to make life easier for administrators, Microsoft worked in a more convenient system of in-house for en masse activation of PCs called KMS – Key Management Service.

The idea behind KMS is that you have a single PC running KMS which can then handle activation for all your Vista clients, so that they don’t have to connect back to Microsoft every single time.

The downside of KMS is that the activation is only good for 180 days, to discourage people bringing in their home systems, activating them and wandering off again.

Bearing in mind that KMS wasn’t scheduled to be released until next year, pirates have managed to get hold of KMS and produce a standalone, fully-activated KMS server called “Windows Vista Local Activation Server – MelindaGates”. Tongue-in-cheek of course…the first “cracked” version of Vista was called Vista BillGates.

INTEL, WE HEAR, leaned on Microsoft to get Vista's DirectX 10 and Aero glass interface to run on its integrated graphics boards.

And as far as some voles are concerned it was the the worst setback that the software maker had to do. We heard it from the horse’s mouth and the guys that had a direct impact to this matter.

The marketing people talked to the business chaps and all together made a decision that Vista's Aero glass should work on i945G and faster Intel integrated stuff.

Volish developers are miffed but have been powerless, after some of the big bosses sent down the directive. Aero glass is also bad on notebooks as it drains a lot of power but it looks sexy and that’s what Vista user interface is all about.

Intel has been setting the graphic industry standard for years now and it doesn’t mean to stop. The G965 chipset is not much better at all but what can do you about the Intel Core 2 duo mobile, Centrino conspiracy, huh? µ

So you mean to tell me ppl gonna see a nice Vista ready sticker on INTEL INTEGRATED CRAP? even the most blinded (Read crixxx) of intellites will admit that you can't do much with that integrated crap save for maybe stressing it with a screen saver of scrolling txt, but to think it leaned on MS to allow them to get it accepted, when we have FULL BLOWN discrete cards getting MINIMUM Vista Aero cert? I guess there is something below min cert for Aero, prolly something like the "Intel squeezed us so we caved and gave them cert for a product that needs to be 100x faster than we accept CERT" geez

Not that I saw that time we sweat :p but let's not argue symantics here. We both know, intel int is crap, you know it, I know it, Nvidia and DAAMIT know it, and most importantly intel knows it. Heck they had to squeeze MS for them to allow it cause they too KNOW its crap.

Microsoft has been forced to acknowledge that a substantial number of PCs running the new version of its Windows operating system will not be able to play high-quality DVDs.

The Vista system will be available to consumers at the end of the month. However, in an interview with The Times, one of its chief architects said that because of anti-piracy protection granted to the Hollywood studios, Vista would not play HD-DVD and Blu-ray Discs on certain PCs.

Dave Marsh, the lead program manager for video at Microsoft, said that if the PC used a digital connection to link with the monitor or television, then it would require the highest level of content protection, known as HDCP, to play the discs. If it did not have such protection, Vista would shut down the signal, he said.

The admission will be a blow to Microsoft, which is hoping that more users will turn to their PCs for watching films and other content.

According to DSG International, which owns PC World, about 15 per cent of PCs sold at present in Britain use digital connections, but that number is expected to grow.

Virtually none of the PCs that use a digital connection have HDCP. “It’s up to the content providers to set the level of protection that Vista applies, but they’re likely to be pretty firm on the need to use high-definition content protection [HDCP] when using a digital connection,” Mr Marsh said. “At the moment HD DVD and Blu-ray Discs certainly require such protection.”

THE USE GOVERNMENT'S cryptologic organisation, the National Security Agency, has admitted that it is behind some of the security changes to Microsoft's operating system Vista.

According to the Washington Post, the agency which was once so secret that it was jokingly referred to as 'No such Agency' has admitted making 'unspecified contributions' to Vista.

Tony Sager, the NSA's chief of vulnerability analysis and operations group, told the Post that it was the agency's intention to help everyone these days.

The NSA used a red and a blue team to pull apart the software. The red team posed as "the determined, technically competent adversary" to disrupt, corrupt or steal information. The Blue team helped Defense Department system administrators with Vista's configuration.

Vole said that it has sought help from the NSA over the last four years. Apparently its skills can be seen in the Windows XP consumer version and the Windows Server 2003 for corporate customers.

The assistance is at the US taxpayers' expense, although the NSA says it all makes perfect sense. Not only is the NSA protecting United States business, its own Defense Department uses VoleWare so it is in the government's interest to make sure it is as secure as possible.

Microsoft is not the only one to tap the spooks. Apple, with its Mac OSX operating system, and Novell with its SUSE Linux also asked the NSA what it thought of their products. The NSA is quite good at finding weapons of mass destruction that are not there.

Whats that Mr. President? activate program "crash all gay married couples PC" on all Vista machines? Got it!
